|“A 31-year-old man who was a cousin of Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors died after he was tasered several times by Los Angeles police officers on January 3, the LAPD has said.
The man, Los Angeles resident Keenan Anderson, was involved in a traffic collision around 3:30 pm on January 3, police said. Footage released by the LAPD shows Anderson running across a street as a police officer approaches the scene. Witnesses are seen telling the officer that Anderson was the driver of the vehicle. A distraught Anderson is seen responding to the officerÃ¢â¬â¢s instructions to sit down on the sidewalk.
According to the LAPD, Ã¢â¬ÅAs additional units arrived at scene, Anderson suddenly attempted to flee the location.Ã¢â¬Â Footage shows officers attempting to restrain Anderson, who can be heard saying, Ã¢â¬ÅTheyÃ¢â¬â¢re trying to George Floyd meÃ¢â¬Â as he struggles on the ground.
An officer is heard warning Anderson that he will use a Taser if Anderson resists. The officer proceeds to use the device several times.
Anderson was transferred to a local hospital, where he went into cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead Ã¢â¬Åapproximately four and a half hours following the use of forceÃ¢â¬Â, the LAPD said.
Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors posted about the incident on Instagram, where she called Anderson her cousin. She wrote: Ã¢â¬ÅMy cousin was an educator and worked with high school aged children. He was an English teacher [Ã¢â¬Â¦] Keenan deserves to be alive right now, his child deserves to be raised by his father.
